Satellite TV “Protection Plan” - Do I need it?

I’m signing up for Dish Network or DirectTV and both offer a monthly $6 protection plan, for technical support, replacement of parts, etc. Is this something I really need?

Its probably worth it. Theres two big things with this.
Reason 1: The install is only covered for a short period of time so if the dish breaks after that period you will have to pay for a new dish and an installer to come fix it for you.
Reason 2: The equipment you get for free is more expensive than you think. Regular receivers are around $100 and the HD and HD/DVR boxes can be 300-800 or more dollars depending on the model. The protection plan covers all the boxes in your house regardless of type which could end up saving you money if one burns out after its warranty period.

These “protection plans” are usually nothing more than high priced insurance. See what your home owners insurance covers. If it doens’t cover things like that, see if they offer it. It would probably be much cheaper. Personally, I never buy these protection plans.
