password protection for wireless network?

i have a linkys wireless interent system. but i have other people stealing my conection. how do i set it up so that only my laptop and my desktop can use the connection? im sure theres a simple answer but im not sure how to. im on yahoo–fock_you_to and aim–theprpjoe ……..i would greatly apppreciate some help! thanks

    Visit the site or find the manual if you still have it. You will need to configure it via a web interface. If you’re lucky, a visit to will yield it. You’ll need to know the default password, etc.

    Once you’re in, enable WPA encryption, which includes passkey authentication. If you only have WEP, you can use that, but be aware that your local nerds can ***** it with ease to watch what you’re doing.

    Easiest way would be to enable WEP (Wireless Encryption Protocol). Most WAPs (Wireless Access Points) have this feature. Then when you connect to the network, it will ask you (one time usually) for a wireless encryption key. Without this key, which is usually a 12-15 digit hexadecimal code, you cannot connect. Problem solved.

    If you want, you could also use MAC address filtering. Each network card ever made has a unique code associated with it. If you set your WAP to only allow the devices you specify to connect, you can achieve the same results.

    Ideally, you can use both, but most of the time its unnecessary.

    from your web browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox or such) type in 192.168.1.1 and hit enter. enter your router’s username and password (or the defaults if you didn’t set them). On older LinkSys routers, the default username is blank and the default password is “admin.” On newer Linksys routers, both the default username and the default password are set to “admin.” Once you’re in your router setup, look for “Wireless Settings” or similar. What you want to do is configure your wireless network to use WPA encryption so you have to enter a password to use your connection. I’m sorry I can’t give you detailed instructions, but I could walk you through if you IM me.     Virtually all wireless routers will have security software built in, but you have to enable it.

    You will need to access the control panel in the router. You do this by typing a code into the browser address bar. Instead of, you would type in the code, something like 192.168.0.1 or the like. Look in the manual for your router, or go online to the manufacturers web site and download the manual.

    Once you gain access to the router control panel, set up WPA encryption. Use 128 bit level if available. You will be required to enter a security key,(password) which your network will use. Write this down and do not forget it, you will need it to access the network.

    Once the key is saved, you will loose your connection to the router. If you have a network icon in the task bar by the clock, then click on it and select ’scan for available networks’. You will see your network you just set up, and it will be identified as a secured network. Select your network and enter the security key when asked. It will then connect to your router and you will be back online.

    Those who were pirating your service, will have to know the key to gain access to the network.

    If they somehow still manage to steal your key and log on, you can upgrade to using MAC code security. I will not go into that at this time, except to say that it will only let a computer with a MAC code listed in the routers file gain access to the network, even if they have the key. The down side of this, is if your computer breaks and your make repairs that effect the MAC code, you will not be able to access the router either.
